An Introduction to LACORS

Local Government Regulation (formerly the Local Authorities Coordinators of Regulatory Services), as part of the Local Government Group, is the local government central body responsible for overseeing local authority regulatory and related services in the UK.

It is our shared ambition to make an outstanding contribution to the success of local government. Together, the Local Government Association, the Local Government Improvement and Development (formerly the IDeA), Local Government Leadership (formerly the leadership centre), Local Government Regulation (formerly LACORS) and the Local Partnerships work with and on behalf of councils to:

• lobby for changes in policy and legislation
• build a strong and positive reputation for local government
• support them and their partnerships to continuously improve and be innovative.

What are regulatory services?
This is the name given to a group of services which exist to protect the public. Local Government Regulation coordinates the regulatory services delivered by local government. These range from protecting consumers against illegal door stop selling to checking hygiene standards in restaurants and food factories.

Local Government Regulation customers
Our website and services are available to customers in the UK who deal with Local Government Regulation; namely local authority heads of regulatory services, front line officers, elected members, officers from central bodies, staff and officials from partner organisations such as central government departments and professional bodies.

Individual businesses and members of the public should contact their trade association or local authority.

How is Local Government Regulation funded?
Local Government Regulation is a local government central body created by the UK local authority associations which comprise of the Local Government Association (LGA), Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA), Convention of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) and Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA).  Local Government Regulation is mainly funded from local government monies.  In England and Wales money is ‘top sliced’ from the Revenue Support Grant.

How does Local Government Regulation work?
Central to Local Government Regulations work is the promotion of quality regulation, development of policy and dissemination of comprehensive advice, guidance and good practice for local authority regulatory services. This is distributed through this website and via e-mail bulletins to heads of service and also specialist officers. Local Government Regulation is assisted in its work by a network of local authority advisers and recognised experts.

Local Government Regulation consults with advisers and stakeholders on a range of issues via its Policy Forums and Focus Groups. Representatives meet to discuss key strategic and policy issues affecting regulatory services to help focus Local Government Regulations work.
